Welcome to Hōʻai
Cultural Education Programs
at Prince Kūhiō Park and Kamalo’ula Cultural Preserve
With a generous grant from Kamehameha Schools - Kaiāulu, we will be conducting a program of ʻāina-based cultural education activities at Prince Kūhiō Park and Kamaloʻula Cultural Preserve at Hōʻai, Kōloa, Kauaʻi. The program will support Native Hawaiian youth ages 0-18, their ‘ohana, and the general community. Please contact us for more information or to sign up for an event.
Highlights and plans for the program are listed below:
ʻĀina-based educational activities at Kūhiō Park & Kamaloʻula: Beginning August 2023, we will host activities to educate learners on the history of the Hōʻai area, as well as other place-based topics appropriate to the site: plants of the area & their uses, basic archaeology, ancient auwai systems, native engineering & agriculture, loko iʻa, stone work, etc. Parallel to this, we will offer opportunities for service learning and participation in the restoration of Kamaloʻula.
Hosting educational activities led by community partners. We will be providing a venue for community partners to host their own activities on site in conjunction with our own programs. Partners will receive support in the form of presenter stipends and supplies to support their activities, while we will provide the site and additional support for their activity. Proposed sessions include hands-on activities on native plants, lei-making, kapa, poi board carving, ʻolelo Hawaiʻi lessons, etc.
Community Service and ‘Ohana Work Days at Kamalo’ula. We will organize opportunities for the community to help in the reclamation and restoration of Kamaloʻula. This will include six community days (every other month) during the year. Priorities for the 2023-24 project year will be: 1) Clearing invasive species from specific areas within Zones 1 – 3, i.e., the Agricultural Complex and preserved sections of the auwai system; 2) Possible clearing of the areas around the Kamaloʻula Heiau; and 3) If/when ready, basic preparation work in some of the areas to be restored.
A schedule of events is being developed and will be posted here at a later date. Check back for more information.
